After the dance, we walked to the playground. We left early, because she didn’t feel at home with all those people. The gate was locked, but bypassing the fence wasn’t difficult. She said the rocks hurt her feet, but when we got to the slide, she didn’t seem to notice. We sat a while & explored the night.
After this, we came back to my car, folded down the back seats and laid there. No words, no thoughts, no sounds except other cars piercing the night.
It was lovely.
She wore a deep blue dress to the floor, and I a white shirt and a blue tie.
We looked together.
We’re born into this world alone, and alone we’ll go out. But in the dash between date of birth and date of death, we can be together.
oh Isaac, this is powerful and beautiful stuff. I love the details that are so very potent--what you both wore, how you complimented one another, how the cars' sounds pierced the night.
ReplyDeletei love the last two lines--they are mind boggling. it is really strange to think about time and that dash between the dates we were born and the dates we will die-but it is a beautiful thought to think we can spend the time in between with ones we love.
